Grow With Us

Our Story

In the year of 1948, Reverend Joseph Howard along with other foundational leaders would establish the New Zion Baptist Church. For many years they would worship in homes, tents and other gathering places until they were able to purchase the land that we are on today, 1131 Garden Road, Marrero. Under Pastor Howard's dynamic leadership the church would experience tremendous growth. Through the faithful giving of the members the very building we worship in today would be erected in 1967.

  • 1948 New Zion Baptist Church established.
  • 1967 church edifice erected.
  • 1983, Pastor Howard would retire.

Due to his health Pastor Joseph Howard would retire as pastor of New Zion Baptist Church. In 1986, God would call Joseph Howard from labor to reward. New Zion would not have to look far for a new leader, Reverend Austin Dennis who served under the leadership of Pastor Howard would be elected by the congregation to serve as pastor. As pastor, Reverend Dennis would make extensive renovations to the facility by adding four classrooms to the rear of our sanctuary on the second floor. They would also purchase a duplex on the back of the property and name it in honor of our founder, Reverend Joseph Howard. In 2023, due to his health, Pastor Dennis would retire from pastor of New Zion Baptist Church.

  • Classrooms added to the rear of the sanctuary.
  • Duplex purchased which would be fully renovated into a fellowship hall.
  • Fellowship Hall named in honor of Reverend Joseph R. Howard.
  • 2023, Pastor Austin Dennis would retire.

After the retirement of Pastor Dennis, the officers and members of New Zion would begin an extensive search for a new pastor. Trusting God for guidance and provision, God would once again show Himself faithful to His church. In April 2025, the officers and members of New Zion Baptist Church would elect Reverend Jordan L. Robinson Sr., as the new pastor. Under Pastor Robinson's leadership our church has seen extensive growth. Many ministries have been reignited and our youth department has been thriving. Our teaching ministries have been reignited and God's Word has been going forth in a mighty and powerful way.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Our core beliefs are central to our Faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.

  • ABOUT GOD

We believe the Scriptures teach that there is one, and only one, living and true God, an infinite, intelligent Spirit, wose name is Jehovah, the Maker & Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth; inexpressibly glorious in holiness, and worthy of all possible honor and confidence and love; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; equal in every divine perfection, and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.

  • ABOUT THE BIBLE

We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction; that is has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error for its matterl that it reveals the principles by which God will judge us, and therefore is, and shall remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions shall be tried.

  • ABOUT HUMANITY

We believe that Scriptures teach that Man was created in holiness, under the law of his Maker; but by voluntary transgressions fell from that holy and happy state; in consequence of which all mankind are now sinners, not by constraint but choice; being by nature utterly void of that holiness required by the law of God, positively inclined to evil; and therefore under just condemnation to eternal ruin, without defense or excuse.

  • ABOUT SALVATION

We believe that the Scriptures teach that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; through the mediatorial offices of the Son of God; who by the appoinment of the Father, freely took upon him our nature, yet without sin; honored the divine law by his personal obedience, and by his death made a full atonement for our sins; that having risen from the dead, he is now enthroned in heaven; and uniting in his wonderperson the tenderest sympathies with divine perfections, he is in every way qualified by be a suitable, a compassionate, and all - sufficient Savior.

  • ABOUT THE CHURCH

We believe the Scriptures teach that a visible church of Christ is a congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by his laws; and exercising the gifts, rights, and priviledges invested in them by His Word; that its only scriptural officers are Bishops or Pastors, and Deacons whose Qualifications, claims and duties are defined in the Epistles to Timothy and Titus.

Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it;

New Zion was founded in 1948 by the late Reverend Joseph R. Howard. Pastor Howard served our church faithfully for many years until his death in 1986. Pastor Howard was a visionary leader and his love of God poured into the community in which we are today. Many stories are still told of how Pastor Howard's care for the community was expressed through the many acts of kindness shown to everyone he came across.
